Three Arrested At Union Street Apartment Break-In

Three people were arrested last month at a reported apartment break-in on Union Street in Concord.

Arrested at the scene were Denise Ann Wescott, 33, of Concord, who was charged with burglary, a felony, and possession of controlled drugs; Brandon John Gilligan, 25, of Concord, who was charged with criminal trespass; and Ronald Versfelt, 40, a homeless man now located in Concord, who was charged with burglary, a felony, criminal mischief (vandalism), criminal trespass, and indecent exposure and lewdness.

Officers and a sergeant were dispatched to a Union Street apartment at around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 6, for a burglary in progress, with a witness alleging that three people had kicked in a door of an apartment in the building.

According to reports and court documents, officers set up positions around the building while one officer spoke to the witness who alleged the people didn’t belong in the building.

A few minutes later, the reporting officer saw a man and woman exit the building.

The officer stopped the two people, Wescott and Versflet, who had his hands in his pockets, reportedly exiting the front of the building. The two were patted down by officers for weapons and ordered to sit on a retaining wall.

Other officers arrived at the scene while the two reportedly told officers what they were doing.

Versflet reportedly asked the officer why they were being stopped and what they were being charged with. The officer reportedly told him that he didn’t know and asked what was going on. Versflet reportedly told the officer they were inside a friend’s house when the police arrived.

Versflet allegedly repeatedly asked to leave and the officer asked him to wait until they could sort things out. He reportedly asked if he needed a lawyer and the officer asked him if felt the need for an attorney.

“No, not really,” Versflet allegedly stated.

Versflet reportedly stated again that they were just hanging out in the apartment, adding that the owner was in jail. He reportedly said the person who invited them to hang out stayed at the apartment a lot.

In the back of the building, police had stopped Gilligan exiting from that entrance, according to a report.

A sergeant began questioning Gilligan about who lived in the residence. Gilligan allegedly said a friend and that he had a key to the apartment. The sergeant requested the key from Gilligan and he allegedly handed over a set of keys that were tried on the door of the building but none of them worked, according to the report.

“Gilligan told me multiple times that he had permission to be in the house and that he was not committing any crime,” a report alleged.

The sergeant then checked the apartment through a damaged door that "appeared to have been forced open," and cleared it, after reportedly finding a bag of marijuana on an end table and the owner’s wallet.

The owner of the apartment was called by a watch commander. The man stated that none of the three had permission to be in his apartment.

When asked about the marijuana, Gilligan allegedly stated that Versflet and Wescott must have been smoking it, according to court documents.

All three were arrested by police and after being cuffed, Wescott allegedly started yelling at the officers, according to the report.

After being processed, an inventory of her backpack was taken where police allegedly found a pair of pliers with the initials “AB” on them and wrenches. Police allegedly found marijuana and a pipe too.

Wescott reportedly expressed concern about being able to get out of jail in order to pick up her child from the bus stop, the officer alleged, and child custody arrangements were made with a family member. She was later released on $30,000 personal recognizance bail and she’s due in court on Dec. 16.

Versflet was processed and allegedly began disrobing at the police station. An officer told him to keep his clothes on but he didn’t and reportedly started screaming.

“You see this, you see this,” Versflet allegedly screamed while fully naked touching himself.

After calming down, officers tried to talk to him about the incident but Versflet reportedly would only reply by saying, “Deedee, dada.” He was not offered bail and arraigned in court on Nov. 7.
