Concord Public Library Director to Retire

Patricia Immen has spent nearly four decades working for the city.

Concord Public Library Director Patricia Immen has announced that she will retire from the position early next year, according to City Manager Tom Aspell.

Aspell made the announcement at the Nov. 12, Concord City Council meeting, noting that she had worked for the city for about 40 years or longer than some city councilors had been alive, to giggles from some members of the board.

Aspell said that along with Immen, two other long-time library employees would also be leaving in the next few months. He said the council agenda for December would be changed to address some of the staffing issues at the library, “so we can get ready for the future.”

Unconfirmed rumors about the retirement announcement started circulating around the city on Nov. 11. Neither Immen nor Aspell responded to email requests for comment about the retirement announcement. Concord Mayor Jim Bouley said in an email on Monday that he hadn't heard that Immen would be leaving. Immen is expected to exit on Jan. 31, 2014.

Immen started at the library as a bookmobile clerk in the early 1970s, according to press reports. She was appointed library director in 2002.
