Salisbury Teen: Take Me Back to Jail

Concord Police: Garrett Beck allegedly stole tea one week, was arrested on other charges two weeks later.

Usually, most people, when they are arrested and sent to jail, can’t wait to get out.

But that reportedly wasn't the case of a teen from Salisbury who was arrested last month in Concord, according to a police arrest report.

Garrett V. Beck, 19, was arrested at 2:04 p.m. on June 24, on a theft by unauthorized taking or transfer charge and a bench warrant.

An officer was called to the Rite Aid on North State Street for a theft report. The manager stated that a young man with dark hair had been in the store and allegedly told a clerk, “You’re not going to understand this but I’m stealing this drink and I want you to call the police.”

The man, later ID’d as Beck, said he would be outside on a bench in the parking lot and left the store without paying for a one liter bottle of Lipton Brisk Iced Tea.

Another officer later found Beck walking south on North State Street near Bouton Street with the bottle of tea.

Beck allegedly told the officer he had just been released from jail and was tired and hungry with no place to go. So he decided to steal the tea, in order to get arrested, in an effort to get sent back to jail, according to the report.

Beck got his wish: He was arrested, refused bail, and sent to jail. He was arraigned on June 24.

A couple week later, Beck was arrested again and charged with unlawful possession of alcohol, default or breach of bail conditions, and a felony bench warrant.

At around 1 a.m. on July 5, an officer was called to headquarters to assist Beck who reportedly was intoxicated and came to the police station because he had nowhere to go for the night and needed a place to stay.

The watch commander noted that Beck was out on bail from June 25, and was supposed to refrain from drinking. There was also a bench warrant out for his arrested on a felony drug charge from June 28.

Beck was arrested and charged. He refused bail and was arraigned on July 5.
