Concord Police: Lufkin Death ‘Possible Traumatic Brain Injury’

Investigators still looking into what actually happened, report "no obvious trauma."

Investigators inside the Concord Police Department are continuing to look into the death of Mark Lufkin, a local homeless man who passed away last week, but believe they have determined the cause.

In a press statement, Lt. Timothy O’Malley, the commander of the criminal investigations unit, stated that detectives believe that Lufkin “sustained a possible traumatic brain injury” but they are also reporting that there was “no obvious trauma evident," based on doctors examining him in Dartmouth.

O’Malley said police were called to the Vegas Block apartments at just past midnight on April 5, for a report that a man was unresponsive. The man, Lufkin, was determined by Concord Fire and Rescue teams to be “breathing but unconscious.” He was transported to Concord Hospital for evaluation and later, flown to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon.

An autopsy was conducted by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office but official results are not yet available.

“Thus far police have been unable to determine what may have caused Mr. Lufkin’s injury, however they are still pursuing leads,” O’Malley stated.

Concord NH Patch first reported on Lufkin’s death on April 7. The report was based on a number of contacts made to Patch on April 6, and April 7, from people connected to the homeless community, their families, and a member of Lufkin’s family, who all reported that he was the victim of a brutal attack at the homeless camp under the I-393 overpass.

The police are asking for anyone with information to contact the Concord Regional Crimeline at 603-226-3100 or the Concord Police Department at 603-225-8600.
