Domestic Violence Thrives In Silence

As every minute ticks by in the United States, 24 women are the victims of sexual and/or domestic violence.  In Merrimack County, one in two women will experience domestic and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.

Outrageous, it is an epidemic by any standard.

Where and how does this violence flourish and thrive?  Silence and inaction are key factors.  The obvious antidote is to TALK about it openly and ACT. We plan to do both.

To mark October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Crisis Center of Central NH is holding an awareness builder and community discussion regarding this topic on October 22, 2013 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at New Hampshire Audubon.

National speaker, Casey Gwinn, will be speaking about the epidemic of domestic and sexual assault and proven interventions and prevention strategies.

A continental breakfast will be provided, tickets are $20 per person and available at cccnh.org. All proceeds will go toward critical Crisis Center Emergency Shelter repairs.

“When family violence occurs, it has a ripple effect. This is a difficult topic to talk about, but unless we do we will not end domestic violence.  We all need to step up,” said Mayor James Bouley, the event’s official host.  "The costs of domestic violence are incalculable to the victims, their children and families.  This violence affects our schools, childhood development, health, and our communities.”

“Unlike many other threats to our well being, domestic violence is preventable, says Jill Rockey, CCCNH Executive Director. “I urge the community to join us in this conversation as a first step in ending this violence. Casey Gwinn is a motivator and known expert on this topic.  We will all leave this learning and discussion opportunity changed.  One of his signature efforts has been the support of Family Justice Centers.  Come and learn about this intervention strategy and join our efforts to put a stop to these heinous crimes.”
