Lambert Files to Run for Congress

Former state Senator hopes to win Republican nomination in New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District.

Former state Senator Gary Lambert, R-Nashua, flanked by friends and supporters, signed up to run for Congress today at the Statehouse.

In a short interview after signing up on June 11, Lambert said if he wins, he would be limiting himself to three terms. He also called for a number of reforms to Congress, including rejection of the system’s pension benefit and healthcare stipend.

“I’ve been out there working hard for about a year now, meeting with voters and listening to their concerns,” he said. “And that’s what I’m going to do.”

Lambert said he felt good about the race so far, despite a third candidate, Jim Lawrence, from Hudson, jumping into the race. He said voters were responding to the issues he was addressing, including focusing on jobs and the economy. He hoped to get elected so he would have another opportunity to serve after serving more than three decades in the Marines.

Noting the shocking victory of David Brat in the Virginia primary yesterday, upsetting a well-financed incumbent, U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7th, a majority leader in the House, Lambert said Kuster was “a classic example” of a representative in D.C. that was out of touch.

“I’m in touch with the voters,” he said. “(Kuster’s) not in touch with the voters out here … she’s not doing town halls … I’m going to stay in touch voters. I’m listening to their concerns.”

Outside of the Secretary of State's Office, a few Democratic protesters held signs calling the Republican “extreme.” However, he denied that he was extreme, saying he was a conservative Republican who won was elected in a Democratic district.

Later, when pressed to answer the question of whether or not he was “extreme,” he said, “No … you can ask my wife. You can ask my daughters. You can ask the constituents of the 13th Senatorial District … they voted me in and liked what I did.”
