Concord Farmers' Market Opens

Farmers say they're excited, despite slow start.

The Concord Farmers' Market is now open for business on Capitol Street, in front of the State House plaza, from 8:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday. The Market will be open through October.

On June 11, despite the pouring rain and limited offerings, local farmers, bakers, livestock raisers, and gardeners were out in force, awaiting customers and selling items.

Deke Jackson of the Yellow House Greenhouse in Canterbury, which primarily specializes in perennials, said things are really blooming this season.

"The plants are flowered and growing nice," he said. "This is a very good market ... they got rid of a lot of cars this year, so there is more room for vendors."

Wayne Hall of Lewis Farm in Concord was selling tomato plants and some greens. But soon, all kinds of vegetables will be springing out of the ground.

"The market, so far, has been a little slow because of the weather," he said. "But people are coming out, enjoying the produce."

The upside to the weather being the way it is, according to Hall, is that the growing season is really taking off. He said the greens have a tendency to be "a little sweeter, because of the darkness ... the darker growing season." The herbs and radishes are very strong, he said, "I think there are great flavors this year." He expects that tomatoes will be ripened in about two weeks. Right now, they are green and the size of softballs, Hall said.

"All in all, it has been a very good market and a very good growing season, so far," he said.
