A Mess on Main Street

Thunderstorm rips through Concord, wipes out Market Days Festival tents.

Police, over the scanner, called it a disaster area … and that’s exactly what Main Street in Concord looked like in the early morning hours of July 20, after a severe late night thunderstorm ripped through Concord and surrounding communities.

The storm hit at just before midnight, cutting off power to thousands in the region.

The storm also struck right as bars downtown were closing, so people were milling around Main Street and some of the side alleyways as police and Market Days Festival organizers were trying to clear debris and assist vendors in repairing their tents.

Wires were down all around the city. Branches were seen strewn all over the city, from Currier Road in the west to Manchester Street in the east. The lights in McKee Square, the busy intersection of Clinton and South streets, were out for a number of hours. Reports of limbs catching on fire were also heard on the scanner.
