Concord School Board Race Heats Up

More candidates sign up to run; filing deadline looms.

During the last two days, three more candidates have filed to run for seats, according to , the school district clerk.

On Thursday, Oliver Spencer has signed up to run for a three-year seat, joining incumbents, School Board President and , a former elementary school principal.

On Friday, George Cofrin, a retired teacher and coach, filed to run for a three-year seat.

Also, Ridgely Mauck, with the , who recently attended a last week, filed for a two-year seat.

If all the candidates stay in the race, there will be no vacant seats and at least one competitive race.

Phillips said if any of the seats don’t have enough candidates, the board could appoint a person to fill the seat until the next election, not unlike how is of until this election.

“[It] would be a term then of one year and Nov 2013 election would be at large when the other terms are for 3 years and by the ward configuration,” he noted.

The filing period closes at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17. It's costs $5 to file. Phillips' office is located at 104 Pleasant St. off Pine Street.
