The day began at the school, where the students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From there, the entire school traveled to OutFITters Thrift Store in Manchester to help out in variety of ways. On Jan. 21, the students of The Beech Hill School learned that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" Later they answered that call.

The students reported that the day was fun and that they felt good about taking part in The National Day of Service, which was established by Congress in 1994 as part of Dr. King’s holiday. In short time, it has become an important tradition for The Beech Hill School students to honor the legacy of Dr. King with a very focused and purposeful day on, rather than a day off.

Head of School Rick Johnson noted, “We really love working with FIT. They are doing great work throughout the state and we are so glad that we can assist in their mission. Moreover, Dr. King said, ‘The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.’ We at BHS believe that to be true as well. As we help our students create foundations for achievement, we are building lasting traditions, like our participation in The National Day of Service. ” The middle school in Hopkinton has been involved in other service learning events, and hopes to increase its impact and outreach as it grows.

The Beech Hill School is an independent middle school that serves students from the area in grades 6 through 8.
