Felon With Machete, Knife in Trouble Again

Concord Police arrest Bryan Batchelder with weapons, breach of bail charges.

A report of a man walking in the middle of the road led to an arrest after the man was discovered to be a felon allegedly breaching bail and in possession of a machete and a knife.

Bryan William Batchelder, 43, of Concord, was arrested at 10:50 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2013, and charged with two counts of felon in possession of a dangerous weapon (a knife or cutting instrument), both felonies, and default or breach of bail conditions.

An officer was sent to East Side Drive and North Curtisville Road for a report of a man walking in the middle of the street, according to a court document.

The officer got out of the cruiser and overheard the man reportedly say, “Great, these motherf-----s,” while walking off the sidewalk into the road. The man, later identified as Batchelder, was allegedly holding a large machete in his left hand and was ordered to drop the weapon, and he did. Batchelder was searched but no other weapons were found although he reportedly told the officer he had another knife in his backpack. When asked why he had a machete in his hand, he reportedly told the officer that it fell out of his backpack.

“This did not make any sense because his backpack was on and there were a great deal of items in it still,” the officer wrote. “I asked why he did not put it back into his backpack. Batchelder stated that he was going to but did not because he could not find his sheath. It did not appear that Batchelder was telling the truth.”

Batchelder reportedly smelled like alcohol and allegedly stated he had been drinking at a friend’s house earlier in the evening. Dispatch reported that he was arrested on Oct. 28, 2013, when he allegedly wielded a knife at people in the Firehouse Block Parking Garage, and his bail conditions required that he not drink any alcohol. When asked about the bail conditions, Batchelder reportedly stated, “Ya don’t do anything wrong?” and later, allegedly admitted to drinking.

Batchelder was taken into custody on the breach of bail charge and an inventory of his backpack revealed a six-inch Coleman knife that was out of its sheath as well as three hypodermic needles.

During processing, Batchelder said he was out of work and collecting Social Security disability, according to the report. He was convicted of felony burglary in August 1990 in Hillsborough Superior Court and felony weapons charges were added to the breach charge.

Batchelder was held on $1,500 cash bail and arraigned the next day.

On top of the October arrest, Batchelder was charged with possession of drugs, a felony, in September 2013, a theft charge in April 2013, and disobeying an officer and driving after revocation or suspension in December 2012.
