Concord Police Called to ‘Bloody’ Assaults on North Main Street

Two face simple assault charges after incident at Vegas Block apartments.

Earlier this week, Concord Police officers were called to the Vegas Block on North Main Street after two men were allegedly involved in an altercation at the apartment building.

Paul R. Rankins, 47, of Concord, was arrested at 8:20 p.m. on Jan. 21, on a simple assault (personal weapons) charge. Later, at 8:56 p.m., Jonathan Michael McCarthy Jr., 29, of Concord, received a summons on a simple assault (personal weapons) charge.

According to a police report, an officer was sent to North Main Street for a report of a fight between two men who were reportedly injured by glass.

While entering the building, an officer noted “there was a trail of blood on the ground and blood on the walls” of the stairwell. The trail of blood led to an apartment where the officer allegedly heard yelling inside the unit.

When he entered the apartment, the officer reported seeing glass on the floor with McCarthy seated in a chair “bleeding from his hand and mouth.” Rankins was reportedly standing in a kitchen, “bleeding from his head.” Both had blood on their clothes, the officer noted.

Rankins allegedly told the officer that nothing had happened between the two but was cuffed by the officer during questioning, according to the report.

During the process of talking with him, the officer alleged that Rankins had “a strong odor of alcohol coming from his mouth and person.”

Two women who were also in the apartment gave written statements.

One of the witnesses alleged that McCarthy and Rankins went out to have some drinks together but later began fighting with Rankins allegedly head butting McCarthy in the lip.

“The fight went on from there,” the officer wrote.

Rankins was arrested but refused bail. He was arraigned on Jan. 22.

The Concord Fire Department transported McCarthy to Concord Hospital. He received a summons and is due in court on March 13.

Both Rankins and McCarthy have been arrested and summoned in the past on various charges.
