Concord Man Faces Drug, Theft Charges

Police allege Robert McKenzie had pills after being arrested on theft warrants.

A local man is facing charges after being arrested on warrants in Downtown Concord.

Robert Edward McKenzie, 28, of Concord, was arrested at 10:35 p.m. on March 21, and charged with theft by deception, receiving stolen property, and possession of controlled drugs, a felony.

The charges stemmed from alleged incidents on North Main Street on March 19.

At a little past 9 p.m. on the day in question, officers were called to the parking lot behind the Vegas Block Apartments on North Main Street to assist a sergeant with a 2002 Kia Spectra that matched the description of a “be on the lookout” call relayed to officers in the field.

Police approached the vehicle, which had its lights on at the time, but no one was inside.

McKenzie, the registered owner of the vehicle, had warrants out for his arrest for a theft from a coupe of days before and had previous interaction with police, according to the report. An associate, Ronald Perron, who also had active warrants, was thought to be with him. (Perron was arrested a few hours later).

Police looked in the vehicle and reportedly saw a flashlight, tools, gloves, a box that looked like a small safe, and a gold watch.

According to the report, the officers moved away from the scene where they could watch the vehicle but their cruisers were not noticeably close. After about 45 minutes, the sergeant radioed that a man was approaching the vehicle and the officers headed to the scene. The man was McKenzie and he was arrested.

During a search and inventory of his possessions, McKenzie allegedly had a plastic baggie with four pills, later identified as Clonazepam, and a drug charge was added.

McKenzie refused bail and was arraigned on March 24.
