GOP Fillibusters Minimum Wage, Thereby Saying, 'Let Them Eat Cake!'

Once again a minority of the U.S. Senate has acted to block passage of an important bill, a bill that would have made a difference in the lives of a lot of New Hampshire citizens.  I’m talking about the bill to increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. The Republicans in the Senate, including Senator Ayotte, essentially filibustered the bill.

I’m proud to say that our senior Senator, Jeanne Shaheen, did everything she could to pass the measure.  As she pointed out, an increase in the minimum wage would have helped 110,000 earners in the Granite State, bringing thousands of them up out of poverty.

Sad to say, the Republican Party apparently prefers to keep minimum wage earners in poverty, where they must rely on social programs, rather than vote for a reasonable increase in the minimum rate.  It’s just another example of the GOP’s extraordinary rejection of the working class.

And, of course, it’s just another demonstration of why New Hampshire must re-elect Senator Jeanne Shaheen.
