Is This the Most Amazing Christmas Lights Display in Concord?

The Moores' home on Borough Road in Penacook dazzles with thousands of holiday lights.

Just off the hustle and bustle of Fisherville Road, there’s a house on Borough Road that is literally beaming with Christmas spirit.

Travel west towards River Road and you can’t miss the home on the left – it’s the house owned by Don and Nancy Moore and it is a sight to behold. Literally, thousands and thousands of holiday lights are strung up on trees and posted on displays putting anyone and everyone who drives by in a festive mood.

The Moores have been putting up the Christmas lights since the 1990s when they bought the house from family members. In 1992, they noticed neighbors were putting up a ton of lights so they joined in. There were a number of homes with major displays on the street but over the years, some folks moved and others stopped putting up displays. The Moores, however, have kept going.

“We do it to make people happy and make them smile,” Nancy Moore said, showing a card they received from two young girls last year, thanking the family for putting up the lights each year. "They call him Mr. Lights."

She said, “It really makes me feel warm inside when we see the tour buses bus in the elderly … there was one year, we were sitting and eating supper, and there was a convoy of wheelchair vans … it was amazing.”

Don Moore said each year, “it gets bigger and bigger.”

The cost for powering all the lights is not inexpensive. But in recent years, the Moores have replaced most of the lights with LEDs, so the electric bills have dropped significantly.

“It knocked everything down,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to run it if I had the old lights … I wouldn’t be able to do it.”

Friends and family are always looking for bargains on lights for the Moores to add to their collection. Don Moore said he often hits the stores after the holiday in order to buy even more lights at discounted prices.

The lights are illuminated between 5 and 9 p.m. at 77 Borough Road. The lights are also on an automatic timer, so they shut off exactly at 9 p.m.

This year, the family bought a small 2-watt FM transmitter, which broadcasts Christmas muzak at 107.9 FM within about a block of the home. Many of the lights are now synchronized with the music.
