What's in Scott Brown's FEC Filing? Big Oil Money

US Senate Candidate Scott Brown (R-MA NH) Latest to Receive Thousands in Campaign Contributions from Dirty Energy Koch Brothers, Among Other Big Oil Special Interests

Concord, NH – US Senate candidate Scott Brown’s just-released second quarter FEC filings show Big Oil special interests are continuing to invest heavily in the former Senator from Massachusetts.

According to Brown’s FEC filing, he received $5,200 from billionaire conservative and oil refining magnate David Koch, and $5,200 from his wife Julia Koch. Missing from Scott Brown’s filing is the additional$5,000 he received from Koch Industries Inc. Political Action Fund, also known as Koch PAC. Koch PAC is the largest oil and gas campaign contributor in the nation — even surpassing ExxonMobil — and has already spent over $1 million in the 2014 cycle. Koch PAC’s July filing shows the donation that is absent from Brown’s filing.

“Special interests are investing in Scott Brown because Scott Brown is a yes man for special interests,” said Zandra Rice Hawkins, executive director of Granite State Progress. “When he was in Massachusetts Brown had a decent record on the environment, but as soon as he got to Washington he cozied up to Big Oil. Scott Brown and his dirty energy friends want to keep our country dependent on fossil fuels instead of growing a clean energy economy that increases jobs and protects our environment.”

The Concord Monitor reported over the weekend that the Koch Brothers have started to hand out their endorsements in the form of high dollar campaign contributions to candidates, including New Hampshire congressional candidate Marilinda Garcia (NH-02). According to the Monitor, Garcia has received $2,600 from David Koch and another $2,600 from the Koch PAC. The latter was distributed to the Garcia campaign the same day it is listed for the Scott Brown campaign, even though Brown did not report it.

Scott Brown voted against repealing $24 billion in tax breaks for the five largest oil companies operating in the United States at the same time he collected thousands of dollars from political action committees connected to the oil industry. The same bill Brown opposed would have instead extended green energy incentives. In the 2012 election cycle, only two Senators received more contributions from the oil industry than Scott Brown.
