A Concord man drowned in the Merrimack River on July 5.

The man, whose name isn’t being released until family members can be notified, reportedly fell into the water of the river around 2 p.m., after attempting to grab a bag of ice that was floating down the river, according to sources.

The 59-year-old South End man frequently fished in the river and reportedly knew of a path of rocks along the river that he often walked along when the water was lower, according to sources. He attempted to navigate the rocks to reach the bag that was floating downstream. However, he lost his balance and fell in the water and the current took him under.

A friend reportedly went to get a life preserver to help him and look around for the man, but was unable to find him.

First responders searching the area were able to find his body in about eight feet of water, jammed into the rocks, just south of the Second Street boat ramp, at around 5:45 p.m.

Concord Fire and Rescue teams, the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department, and others were at the scene attempting to find the man.

Brian Blackden was at the scene and took a number of photos which he has submitted to Patch.
