Newspaper Wins Pulitzer for Feature on Jeff Bauman

The day before the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, one publication was given an award for its work in tactfully covering the recovery of former Concord resident Jeff Bauman, who was severely injured during while watching near the finish line when the bombs went off.

On Monday, Columbia University announced the 2014 Pulitzer Prize award winners, considered the most prestigious awards in journalism.

Among the winners was the New York Times' Josh Haner, who won in the category of feature photography for his series of photos of Bauman during his grueling rehabilitation efforts.

"My concern is that people forget tragedies like this. It’s important to bring attention to what survivors are going through and how their lives change, and help them," said Haner,according to the New York Times. "I felt so passionately about this story and I felt that it was the best work I’d ever done."

On the one-year anniversary of the tragic events of the Boston Marathon bombings, Bauman wrote a letter to the City of Boston, thanking residents for their support during a difficult time.

"I am lucky, I know. Lucky to be alive. Lucky to live in this city. Lucky to have your love and support," Bauman wrote, according to the Boston Herald. "That’s why I want to say to everyone who donated any amount, large or small, especially the children who broke open their piggy banks to send us their life savings: Thank you. You changed our lives."
