Concord's Camp Spaulding Closes Due to Bed Bugs
Season ends early for campers in Penacook.
Camp Spaulding has cancelled camp for the rest of the season after bed bugs were discovered in two of the boys' cabins, according a story by The Associated Press.
According to the report, camp counselors found the bugs last week and moved boys out of the cabins to other cabins. The cabins were treated by an exterminator.
The Board of Health of Concord and Child and Family Services, the agency that runs the camp, decided later that the camp should undergo "extensive treatment," including replacement of materials and possibly rebuilding some of the cabins, which could take months and cost money the organization does not have, according to sources.
The camp is an overnight summer camp for boys and girls aged 8 to 14, on a sliding scale. It also assists in training college students who are working on education degrees.
Concord Patch heard rumors about the bed bugs incident earlier this week but representatives from Child and Family Services did not return a request for comment. A note on the org's website said that they planned to be open for the 2015 season.
