Local Cow Goes to School

If you can't bring the school to the cow, why not bring the cow to the school? That is exactly what Pittsfield Middle/High School did on April 10th at the school's 2nd annual Wellness Fair, the school brought at Miles Smith Farm cow and bunny into the school. The focus of the fair was making healthy choices and who better to have in attendance than a healthy Scottish Highlander steer; but not just any steer. Two year old Curious Bleu, famous for a book written about his adventures as a day old calf, spent the morning in the school's foyer greeting students and mooing for attention.

The event, planned by June Keusch, the Pittsfield School nurse featuring local businesses that help students make healthy and interesting career and life choices, was well attended by students in grades 7-12. Most students were amazed that there was a cow in their lobby. And some were interested in how the cow's manure was handled since Bleu is not yet house trained. Bleu greeted over two hundred students and was a perfect gentleman the whole time. Angus, the rabbit, enjoyed hugs from some students but mostly sat quietly in his basket.

And when he left, the maintenance crew was amazed at how clean the area was. “I expected a big mess, but this is really clean,” said one crew member.
