I-89 Tractor Trailer Crash

On Nov. 12, at approximately 5:08 a.m. the New  Hampshire State Police responded to a report of a tractor trailer that had jackknifed on Interstate 89 at mile marker 46.4 in Grantham. Investigation determined that a 2009 IHC tractor trailer driven by Scott Therien, age 36 of Blackstone, Mass, was traveling northbound on  I-89 when it lost control and jackknifed. Road conditions had deterioated in the area due to precipitation and temperatures hovering around freezing. The tractor trailer slid off  the left shoulder down the steep declining median embankment. The tractor trailer came to final rest in the median near the southbound lanes of travel. Therien sustained  injuries as a result of the crash. He he was transported by ambulance to New London Hospital for treatment.

One of the truck’s fuel tanks ruptured during the incident and significant quantity of diesel fuel was discharged onto the ground. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental services responded and will be overseeing the fuel clean up. The box style trailer was hauling appliances. None of the load was compromized as a result of the crash.  A southbound lane closure was set up for approximately five hours as as Patten’s Towing heavy duty wreckers worked to remove the truck and trailer. Also assisting the New Hampshire State Police was the Grantham Police Dept., the Springfield Police Dept and the Grantham Fire Department.
