VIDEO: Romney Won’t be Watching Obama's Convention Speech
Republican nominee crashes veterans press conference; accuses president of not fulfilling first set of political promises.
A press conference touting a full slate of political supporters who have either served in the military or are family members of veterans received an unexpected guest on Thursday – the candidate they were backing.
Republican nominee Mitt Romney dropped by the Legislative Office Building in Concord to thank veterans for their support. The candidate shook hands, posed for pictures, and explained that while he didn’t talk about Afghanistan during his convention speech, he did address the American Legion convention during the Republican National Convention, something he said Barack Obama didn’t have time for.
Romney said Obama hadn’t kept his promises to veterans who have more expensive health care than before he took office. Romney said it would be “interesting” to listen to the president explain his “broken promises to forgotten people.
“The president needs to report tonight on his promises rather than try and reset a whole set of new promises he also won’t be able to keep,” Romney said.
When asked if he had been watching the Democratic convention, Romney said, “No, I haven’t watched so far.” When asked if he would be watching Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night, Romney said, “Don’t plan on it.”
Romney then headed for his car but turned around and came back to the reporter who asked the question about the speech and said if Obama was going to report on the promises he had made, “I’d love to watch that … the American people deserve to know why he did not keep his promises.”
About 30 veterans and relatives of veterans have formed New Hampshire Veterans and Military Families for Mitt. The group was explaining reasons for their support, including stronger military, better veterans benefits, and an economic plan they believe will turn the country around. Other campaign events were scheduled with veterans around the state.
According to press reports, Romney has been dropping by short campaign events around New Hampshire. He was in West Lebanon earlier this week. He is putting together debate prep at his former lieutenant governor’s vacation home in Vermont.
