Concord Fire Chief: No Cause Yet on Fayette Street Fire

Fire started under the porch.

Fire officials have not yet determined what caused a fire that has left many people homeless on .

The was called to the 21-23 Fayette St. at around 11:30 p.m. on March 12. According to officials, upon arrival firefighters found a trash shed underneath a side porch on fire, with the flames extending to the underside of the porch. The fire had extended into the basement window but was quickly extinguished, according to Concord Fire Chief .

“Fortunately, (it was) a small fire that did not progress into a working incident,” he said.

The sprinkler system was activated in the basement and the fire was extinguished about 15 minutes after firefighters arrived. Fourteen people were left homeless when power in the apartment building was shut off.

The fire is still under investigation.

Workers at the building on the morning of March 13, had sealed the windows in the basement and were pulling off burnt wood from the porch.

The owner of the apartments said he and others were working as fast as possible in order to make sure tenants could return to their apartments. He said that he didn’t know if the fire was accidentally or deliberately set although he doubted it was the latter saying his tenants were “all good people” and he never had any problems with the apartments.
