Car Catches on Fire on Bridge Street

Concord bystanders help women get baby items out of burning car; firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The Concord Fire Department extinguished a car fire outside of the Holiday Inn on April 15, at a little before 2 p.m.

According to witnesses, the sedan began flaming from under its engine while on Bridge Street. The car turned onto North Main Street and then pulled into the hotel’s parking lot, completely engulfed in flames.

Brian Blackden and Eric Raymond happened to be driving behind the sedan and called 911. They then pulled into the parking lot and assisted the two women and infant in getting their belongings out of the burning car.

“They bolted out of their doors and got the baby seat out,” Blackden said. “We parked and worked on getting stuff out there. We saved most of the baby’s stuff but there were some things still left in the car.”

Blackden said police officers showed up and one tried to use a fire extinguisher on the car but the fire was too strong.

“They were pretty quick but it was already fully involved,” he said.

Once firefighters arrived though, they were able to quickly get it out, Blackden said.

Concord Fire Chief Dan Andrus said Engine 4, Ambulance 4, and the battalion chief responded to the fire and were on the scene about four minutes after the 911 call came in. The department had it extinguished quickly and left the scene at around 2:30 p.m.

The known cause of the fire was not available at post time, Andrus said.

The women were upset but physically OK, Blackden said.
